How We Re-Roofed Vandervest Harley Davidson

Green Bay, Wisconsin

The Vandervest Harley Davidson store in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is not just another retail space. It's a sanctuary for bike enthusiasts, a wedding venue, and much more—a space that holds iconic motorcycles and also hosts life's most treasured moments. With so much riding on this large commercial building, every element, including the roof, needs to be in pristine condition. That's where we, Badgerland Restoration & Remodeling, stepped in. Our recent project at this super store was nothing short of transformative, focusing primarily on a complete commercial roof replacement along with replacing 18 custom skylights. Here's how we achieved it.

The Challenge: A Multilayered Roof and a Multifunctional Space

From our initial inspection, we realized this was not going to be a run-of-the-mill job. The existing roof was comprised of multiple layers of various types of shingles, including cedar and shake. To make matters more complicated, the large number of custom skylights embedded into the roofing surface required special attention for removal and replacement. Plus, the roof needed to be updated to meet current building code standards, which meant installing new plywood throughout. Below this complex rooftop was an interior loft area used as a wedding venue, complete with ornate chandeliers and a layout that needed to be protected from falling debris and dust throughout the renovation process.

Protecting the Venue: Our Initial Steps

The very first order of business was to safeguard the interior loft space from the inevitable mess that accompanies roofing projects. We took extensive measures to cover and protect everything from the glistening polished floors to the ornate chandeliers. Special tarpaulins and coverings were strategically placed to ensure that the area remained as pristine as possible.

Rolling up Our Sleeves: The Re-Roofing Process with GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles

Once we had taken steps to secure the interior, we embarked on the challenging but gratifying process of replacing the massive roof. Off came the layers of cedar and shake shingles, to be replaced by new, durable materials. For this project, we chose top-of-the-line GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in the color Weatherwood, a decision influenced by both quality and aesthetics.

GAF is one of the most reputable shingle manufacturers in the USA, with over a century of experience in the roofing industry. They offer a wide variety of roofing materials that are renowned for their durability, efficiency, and aesthetic value. GAF's commitment to quality aligns with our own, making them an ideal partner for this extensive renovation project.

The real feather in our cap, however, is that we are a GAF Certified Master Elite Contractor, a designation that only 2% of roofing contractors in North America can claim. Achieving this status requires a commitment to ongoing professional training, a stellar track record, and high customer satisfaction rates. As a Master Elite contractor, we are uniquely qualified to offer and install GAF's top-tier products, and this certification allows us to provide our clients with the Golden Pledge Warranty, a non-prorated 50-year warranty that is America’s most comprehensive for asphalt roofing. This covers material, labor, and installation, offering our customers peace of mind for decades to come.

Hiring a contractor with GAF Certified Master Elite status offers multiple benefits, including a higher level of confidence in the quality of work and materials. The certification also ensures that all installation procedures meet the stringent standards set by GAF, giving you peace of mind that you're not just getting a new roof, but a durable, long-lasting roofing system, installed by certified experts.

During this re-roofing phase, extensive cleaning was a top priority. This was especially important due to the number of large skylights, as dust and debris were far more likely to accumulate. The team worked diligently to ensure that every corner and crevice was debris-free before moving on to the next stage.

The Icing on the Cake: Why We Chose Custom Velux Skylights

One of the most unique aspects of this project was replacing the 18 custom skylights that are an integral part of the Harley Davidson store's design. Given the store's multifunctional space, the skylights not only needed to be durable but also aesthetically pleasing. After thorough consideration, we decided to install custom Velux skylights.

Founded in 1941, Velux is an industry leader in manufacturing high-quality skylights, sun tunnels, and roof windows. With a reputation for innovation and reliability, Velux offers a range of products that blend functionality with style. Known for their energy-efficient designs, Velux skylights come with advanced features such as Clean, Quiet & Safe glass that reduce exterior noise, have superior water resistance, and are extremely easy to maintain. These features were particularly aligned with the needs of a busy, high-footfall area like this large commercial store.

What makes Velux skylights stand out is their meticulous attention to detail in design, durability, and energy efficiency. The triple pane glass they offer is insulated for both thermal and acoustic comfort, keeping the indoors cozy and quiet. Moreover, Velux skylights are built to last, with robust frames and materials that can withstand extreme weather conditions, essential for the variable climate in Green Bay.

Our team of expert installers worked carefully to fit these custom Velux skylights into the newly renovated roof. We took measures to ensure that the installation process went seamlessly, blending the structural and aesthetic elements into one cohesive design. The result is a roof that not only protects but illuminates the space beautifully, enriching the ambiance of the Harley Davidson store's multifaceted venue.

By combining Velux's state-of-the-art skylights with GAF's industry-leading roofing materials, we ensured that this Harley Davidson store in Green Bay not only meets but also surpasses modern building standards. These selections, backed by our GAF Master Elite certification, provide a high level of assurance that the renovation will stand the test of time.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, this wasn't just about replacing shingles or installing skylights. It was about enhancing a space that embodies the spirit of an iconic brand and serves as the backdrop for significant life events. We are proud to say that we rose to the occasion, meeting the challenges head-on and exceeding expectations. Like a well-oiled Harley Davidson bike, we believe in the power of precision, quality, and a job well done.

This beautiful Harley Davidson store in Green Bay now boasts a robust, beautiful roof with skylights that elevate its architectural appeal. Not only is it compliant with all modern building codes, but it also comes with the security of an unparalleled warranty. The interior loft, once vulnerable to the dust and debris of our operation, remains as immaculate as ever—ready to host the next big event or joyful wedding celebration.

Winter Tips From Badgerland Restoration & Remodeling - Weyauwega WI
by Jenna Wydeven 26 Oct, 2023
As winter approaches, it's time to talk about our favorite home appliance—the furnace! This bad boy keeps us from turning into human popsicles and deserves a little appreciation. But hey, have you ever thought about the importance of giving your furnace some TLC? Don't worry, Badgerland Restoration has got your back! In this blog, we will dive into the dos and don'ts of furnace maintenance. So grab a cup of hot cocoa, sit back, and let's make sure your furnace doesn't leave you out in the cold. The Dos Schedule an Annual Furnace Spa Day: Treat your furnace to a fancy check-up by a qualified technician. They'll give it a thorough inspection, clean it up, and make sure it's performing like a rockstar. Think of it as a spa day for your furnace, ensuring it avoids major meltdowns and doesn't start humming show tunes. Filter Flair: Show your furnace some filter love by changing those air filters regularly. Clogged filters can make your furnace work harder than a squirrel trying to open a walnut. Aim to change filters regularly to keep your furnace breathing easy and prevent it from feeling suffocated. For 1- to 2-inch filters, replace them every 1 to 3 months. For 3- to 4-inch filters, replace them every 6 to 9 months. For 5- to 6-inch filters, replace them every 9 to 12 months. Unleash the Vents: Don't let your vents become a fashion nightmare, blocking the flow of warm air like a misplaced disco ball. Vacuum and dust those vents regularly to keep the warm air flowing freely and evenly throughout your home. Especially the return vents. Don't be scared to grab a screw driver to take those vent covers off. They are typically pretty easy to remove and replace. You'll be shocked what you might see in there! Your furnace will definitely thank you with a subtle "ahhh." Clear the Furnace Runway: Your furnace needs some space to strut its stuff, so don't use its room as a storage closet. Avoid storing flammable materials near the furnace and ensure easy access for maintenance and repairs. Let your furnace feel like a VIP instead of a forgotten basement dweller. As winter sets in, it's essential to be aware of potential hazards that can affect our homes. One such concern is roof ice dams. In this blog, we'll dive into what roof ice dams are, the damage they can cause, effective ways to fix them, and preventive measures to keep them at bay. What is a Roof Ice Dam? A roof ice dam forms when snow on the roof melts, flows down to the colder roof edges, and freezes, creating a barrier of ice. As this cycle repeats, the ice dam grows, hindering proper drainage of water from the roof. Damage Caused by Ice Dams: Ice dams can wreak havoc on your roof and home, leading to several issues. Here are some common damages caused by ice dams: 1. Roof and structural damage: The weight of the ice dam can strain the roof structure, potentially causing leaks, damaged shingles, and even structural integrity issues. 2. Water leaks: When water backs up behind the dam, it can seep into your roof, resulting in water stains, peeling paint, sagging ceilings, and even mold growth. Fixing Ice Dams To address ice dams effectively, it's crucial to take immediate action. Here's a step-by-step guide to fixing them: 1. Safely remove snow: Use a roof rake or a long-handled broom to remove snow from the roof, focusing on the lower sections near the edges. This prevents further melting and freezing. 2. Create channels for drainage: Place calcium chloride ice melt in pantyhose and lay them vertically across the ice dam. This helps melt the ice and create paths for water to drain. 3. Address underlying issues: Consult a professional roofer or handyman to assess your roof's insulation and ventilation. They can identify any deficiencies and recommend improvements to prevent future ice dams. Preventing Ice Dams Prevention is key when it comes to ice dams. Here are some effective preventive measures: 1. Proper insulation: Ensure your attic is well-insulated to minimize heat loss from your living spaces to the roof. This helps maintain a more uniform roof temperature. 2. Attic ventilation: Improve attic ventilation by installing vents, soffit vents, or ridge vents. Proper air circulation helps regulate roof temperature and prevents snow from melting and refreezing. 3. Seal air leaks: Identify and seal any air leaks in your attic, such as gaps around light fixtures, chimneys, or exhaust fans. This prevents warm air from escaping, reducing the risk of ice dams. 4. Clean gutters and downspouts: Regularly clean debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water flow. Clogged gutters can contribute to ice dam formation. 5. Heat cables: In areas prone to heavy snowfall, consider installing heat cables along the roof edges. These cables help melt snow and ice, preventing dams from forming. Roof ice dams can cause significant damage to your home, but with proper knowledge and preventive measures, you can protect your roof from these winter hazards. Remember to remove snow, create drainage channels, and address insulation and ventilation issues. By taking proactive steps, you'll ensure a safe and secure home during the winter months. Stay warm and keep your roof ice dam-free!

Fire is unpredictable. It can strike without warning and wreak havoc on any property. At Badgerland Restoration & Remodeling, we have seen the aftermath of numerous house fires and understand the distress it can cause homeowners. This article aims to shed light on common causes of house fires and the typical consequences of fire damage. Common Causes of House Fires: Cooking Equipment : Pots and pans can overheat and cause a fire easily if the person cooking gets distracted and leaves cooking unattended. Always stay in the room, or ask someone to watch your food, when cooking on the stove. Heating : Portable heaters, especially when placed too close to flammable materials like curtains, bedding, or furniture, can lead to fires. Smoking in bedrooms : Bedrooms are a common area where fires begin due to smoking. A cigarette that's not put out properly can cause a flame, as the beddings and furniture can catch fire quickly. Electrical Equipment : An electrical appliance, such as a toaster can start a fire if it has a faulty or frayed cord. Candles : Leaving a candle unattended, placing it near flammable items, or knocking it over can quickly ignite a fire. Faulty Wiring : Old or faulty wiring can cause sparks which can ignite flammable materials. Barbecues : Used improperly, barbecues can lead to a significant fire. It's essential to keep them away from the home, tablecloths, or any plants and trees. Flammable Liquids : Keeping substances like gasoline, cleaning agents, or paints can be a risk if they're stored near sources of heat. Christmas Trees : If they get dry, they can catch fire easily. Make sure to water your tree regularly and ensure it's away from open flames or heat sources.

VINYL & BRICKS & STEEL! OH MY!

Owning a home is a whirlwind adventure filled with unexpected twists and turns . As a homeowner, I'm sure you've probably experienced your fair share of house-related surprises. From plumbing predicaments that rival Niagara Falls to battles with weeds that seem to possess mutant growth abilities and sprout at superhuman speed, it's all part of the homeownership rollercoaster adventure. But have you ever stopped to ponder the quiet heroes of your home? Yes, those trusty windows that let in the sunlight, showcase your impressive collection of mismatched curtains, and provide a steady stream of amusing bird antics. Alas, even the sturdiest windows have their limits, and it might be time to wave them goodbye. So, grab your metaphorical magnifying glass, and let's explore the comical and not-so-subtle hints that your windows might be staging a protest! Draft Drama: If your windows have a flair for the dramatic and insist on hosting chilly drafts like it's a winter breeze party, it might be time to put your old windows on the "naughty" list. Sure, they may have a future on Broadway, but your toes will thank you for prioritizing warmth. Warp Speed: Are your once-perfectly square windows suddenly channeling their inner Picasso? While abstract art has its charm, your home's curb appeal might be less appreciative of this avant-garde approach and is not exactly the vibe we're aiming for in home design. Rainbow Reflections: If your windows have mastered the art of casting rainbow hues all around the room, congratulations! You're hosting a private disco party, complete with a light show. But seriously, it might be time to consider replacing those glass panels. Gymnastic Ventures: Have your windows developed a sudden passion for gymnastics with impressive flips, twists, and dismounts every time you try to open or close them? It's entertaining for sure, but not very functional and when it becomes an Olympic-level challenge just to operate them, it's time to upgrade to more cooperative windows. Peekaboo Pests: If critters have mistaken your windows for an exclusive insect nightclub, it's time to rethink your window situation. "No cover charge" should not apply to bugs! You definitely need and deserve windows that say "no entry" to uninvited guests. DIY Rain Shower: Are your windows giving you an indoor rain shower experience? While rain is delightful outdoors, and a relaxing experience in the shower, it's a different story when you're enjoying it from the comfort of your living room. This is certainly a dramatic cry from your windows, telling you it's time for a curtain call. Decibel Deluge: Is eavesdropping on your neighbors easier through your windows than your phone? Just think of how easy it is to hear you from outside. Your privacy is quite literally flying out the window. When your windows are sharing local gossip at decibel levels even they shouldn't achieve, it's time to swap them out for some quality soundproof ones. Time Travelers: Your windows might have a secret talent for transporting you to a bygone era – one where rusty hinges and peeling frames were considered chic. While nostalgia has its charm, it's time to bring your home design into the present. Faded Décor: If your furniture and artwork is looking like they've seen one too many sunsets and auditioning for a sepia-toned movie role, your windows might be lacking UV protection skills. It's time to invest in new windows that provide a shield against all those harsh rays. Sky High Utility Bills: If your energy bills are reaching for the stars, pull your windows back down to Earth with modern, energy-efficient replacements. Your wallet will thank you. Embrace the change and let your new windows be the talk of the neighborhood! For all the right reasons this time! ;) While your old windows might have served you well, even with all their quirks and stories, they deserve their retirement too. Upgrading to new windows not only will fix all these quirks but also brings a fresh perspective to your space. Picture this: windows that keep the drafts out, stay in shape (without the gymnastics routine), and provide crystal-clear views without a rainbow filter. Modern windows are designed with energy efficiency in mind, saving you money on heating and cooling bills while keeping your home cozy. And don't forget the enhanced security, noise reduction, and UV protection that come with upgraded windows. So, the next time your windows give you a show-stopping performance of their own, remember that it's a cue for a new chapter in your home's story. Say goodbye to the drafty drama and faded décor, and welcome in the fresh breeze of change. Your home deserves it, and who knows – your new windows might just steal the spotlight in the most unexpected ways!
