WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR HOME HAS FIRE DAMAGE

Fire damage can happen anywhere to anyone at any given time. It can cause significant damage to the interior and exterior of your home. Read on to learn more about what starts house fires and what happens when your home has fire damage.

CAUSES OF HOUSE FIRES

  • Cooking is a common cause of home fires. It’s important to be present in the kitchen when you are cooking. Set a timer and keep any flammable utensils or equipment away from the stovetop.
  • Heating and electrical equipment issues can cause a home fire. If you use space heaters, make sure to use ones that will automatically turn off if they tip over or overheat. Living in an older home could mean that there is faulty wiring. Be sure to inspect your wiring when purchasing a new home. Power surges and electrical shortages are other common causes of fires.
  • Smoking is another way that fires can occur inside or outside of your home. Make sure that all lit cigarettes are fully put out before walking away. Hot ashes or cigarettes can still catch something on fire.
  • Christmas trees, real or fake, can be a fire hazard during the holidays. Trees should be placed away from any heat sources or high-traffic areas. If you are buying an artificial tree, find a tree that is fire resistant.
  • Candles should never be left unattended for a long period. Keep candles away from flammable materials and pets or children. Don’t put candles on an unstable surface.

All that being said, sometimes, fires are unavoidable despite your best efforts. Lightning strikes and other accidents can cause a fire. Sometimes, the cause of a home fire is never determined.

WHAT FIRE DAMAGE DOES

Home fires can damage your property in ways that you may not have thought of.

Fire damage comes in many forms and can cause numerous problems for the structure and belongings in your home. Fires leave a horrible smell and can permanently alter surfaces. Walls, furniture, and carpet can be stained or completely unusable after a home fire has taken place. Even a very small fire can cause significant odors and damage.

Besides fire damage, water damage is usually a big part of the problem after a fire has been put out. Depending on how much water was used, the water damage could actually be worse than the fire damage itself. You may experience standing water or moisture issues within your flooring, walls, and furniture after a fire.

Electrical wiring and appliances are frequently damaged after a home fire. Your plumbing could also be affected by fire damage. No matter the size or scope of a fire, fire damage restoration is a complicated and multifaceted job that requires debris removal, extensive cleaning, deodorizing, and rebuilding.
